Festivals and Fairs in Rajasthan

Festivals and Fairs in Rajasthan

The State of Rajasthan in India, is vibrant and exotic in every sense of the word. Amidst the awe-inspiring architecture, the colour-filled marketplaces and the myriad topography of the Desert, one also finds a host of fairs and festivals that are unique in themselves.

The people of Rajasthan celebrate each occasion, be it religious, at the time of harvest or to mark the change of season. Participating in these various fairs and festivals is truly a recognition of the importance of celebrating each act of life in all its entirety.

Some of the most famous of such festivals are:

Desert Festival, Jaisalmer (Jan-Feb.)

Set in Jaisalmer, the heart of the Rajasthani desert, this includes a range of folk performers like musicians, snake charmers, puppeteers and ballad singers. Added to this are activities like turban-tying competitions, camel sports and traditional wrestling matches. The high point of this festival comes at its end when there is a sound and light show on the desert sand on a moonlit night.

Elephant Festival, Jaipur (March-April)

Although this is basically celebration of holi, the festival of colours, the excitement is increased by the inclusion of beautifully bedecked elephants and several elephant sports.

Gangaur Festival (March-April)

Devoted to Goddess Parvati, this 18-day festival is full of activities and ends with a grand procession believed to mark the arrival of Lord Shiva at her house to escort her back.

Marwar Festival, Jodhpur (October)

This festival is devoted mainly to the dance and music of Marwar. Its highlight is the classical maand style of folk music particular to the region.

Camel Festival, Bikaner (January)

During this festival the entire desert city of Bikaner lights up with the joy of music and dance. Visitors can see fascinating folk performances and camel activities including a unique camel dance.

Teej Festival, Jaipur (July-August)

Although this festival marking the beginning of monsoon is mainly a woman’s festival, it makes for an interesting experience even if it is just by watching.

Urs Ajmer Sharif, Ajmer (According to Lunar Calendar)

Celebrated in memory of the great Sufi Saint Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti, this is a time when thousands of believers come together at his shrine to offer prayers. Many special programs are organized in this connection.

Nagaur Fair, Nagaur (Jan-Feb.)

Basically an animal fair, it offers lots of fun, games, contests and traditional sporting events and music.

Baneshwar Fair, Baneshwar (Jan-Feb.)

This is a religious fair based on traditional rituals. It is specially sacred amongst tribals from neighboring states who get together in their worship of Lord Shiva.

Mewar Festival, Udaipur (March-April)

Held in celebration of the augment of spring, one can enjoy music, processions, fireworks and folk activities at this time.

Summer Festival, Mount Abu (June): Organised in Mount Abu, the only hill station of Rajasthan, this is a feel-good celebration and a time to relax and enjoy yourself amongst beauty, fun and festivities.

In each of these festivals one sees the desert in different forms, and each time the experience is worth every bit of the journey.
