CHEAP THRILLS - NO FRILLS! India's Budget Airlines

Low-cost airlines are mushrooming in India, and the traveler has become the king. “The Fare Well” carriers are putting a smile on the face of the air passenger.

Thanks to the Open-sky policy 1990. This policy allowed private air taxi- operators to operate flights from any airport, both on a charter and a non charter basis and to decide their own flight schedules, cargo and passenger fares. As a result of this Open-sky policy Low Cost Carriers (LCC) or no frill airlines started operations and this was the time when the wallet-friendly carriers took off.

Air Deccan can claim credit for bringing the budget airline concept to the Indian skies. Air Deccan unleashed cut-throat competition in the aviation scene with fares mostly equalling similar train fares. In response, leading domestic airlines like Indian Airlines, Jet Air and Sahara Airlines slashed rates and unveiled Advanced Purchase schemes (Apex) to take on the new challenges. Competition, as always, brought the best to the customer, other Low Cost Carriers (LCC) jumped into the field. Now a day several LCC are flying in Indian sky.
